Many after school and summer programs are developed for typical developing
students with a few students who have special needs participating, but
our programs at Special LINKS are just the opposite. We
design everything around the students who have special needs and then
integrate typical developing peers to participate so they can learn more
about the day-to-day challenges of children with disabilities. This is
essential so they can have a greater understanding, appreciation and acceptance
of those who are different. For instance, when we go to gymnastics, everyone
participates in the lessons with Coach Scott and each child is taught
the same thing in a different way. They
all learned how to jump on the trampoline or how to do floor exercises
or how to walk on the balance beam and at the end of the day everyone
has something to say about what they did in gymnastics which creates a
common bond.
Functional
Academics – We incorporate functional academics into all
activities so that students can improve upon what they are learning within
their regular educational environment, and this includes reading, writing,
mathematics, sciences and social studies.
Life, Community & Transition/Vocational Skills –
Our daily activities in this area include, working on self-help skills
like brushing teeth and brushing hair, cooking classes, travel safety
skills such as riding the RTD bus, socialization skills, how to self-advocate
and help others and typical peer integration.
Arts/Crafts/Music
– Creativity and the arts are a vital part of stimulating the mind
and we incorporate many activities every day that include playing instruments,
singing, listening to music, dancing, painting, drawing and sensory integration.
Athletics/Sports – We adapt any kind of athletics
to the individual needs of each of our students and here are a few of
the activities we schedule into our weekly regimen, swimming, gymnastics,
bowling, basketball, tennis, baseball and kickball.
